Karen leads the Environment Agency’s Asset Management approach to asset data and Building Information Management (BIM) since its introduction into Departments as part of the Government Construction Strategy.
The Environment Agency is a key member of the Government BIM Working Group which brings together Departments including Local Authority representation. The Groups objective is to drive the Governments digital programme across the industry to drive improvement, increase productivity and reduce carbon within the delivery of capital projects and through the life of assets.
The BIM mandate, combined with Defra’s Open Data policy and the strategic modernising asset management ambition, has assisted the Environment Agency to recognise how a data driven approach to asset management brings benefits across the whole asset lifecycle and provides the foundation for digital transformation. In addition, it offers benefits to other asset owners and users of flood risk assets.
Developing a digital whole life approach to asset management
Under the Governments Construction Strategy the Environment Agency was mandated to deliver Level 2 BIM for procuring and managing asset data on its WEM Framework. The implementation has led to a number of changes and improvements in how asset data and information is managed across the whole asset life cycle. Agency is recognised by Government and other industry members as leading in this emerging discipline.
